Playstion 5 Arrives on the Scene

With Microsoft’s surprise announcement with XBOX Series S and Series X pricing earlier this month, many were expecting Sony to follow suit soon after as they wanted to pre-order the PS5. Questions such as “When is the PS5 coming out?” or “How much is the PlayStation 5?” was on everyone’s mind.

Last week, Sony announced their PlayStation 5 showcase would be live-streamed. Today at the showcase the price and release date of the new all-digital and disc-drive versions were revealed as well as additional game titles to be launched on the system. We also received pricing on a number of PlayStation 5 accessories.

Playstation 5 Launch Titles

Although we already had an idea from earlier this summer, Sony confirmed the available PlayStation 5 launch titles. More third-party titles are sure to come. As you can see, the price of next-gen seems to be trending towards the new standard $69.99 price. Sony has said that first-party titles will vary in price from $49.99 to $69.99.

It will be great that Sony will be including a free game with the console. From the demos shown thus far, Astro’s Playroom should showcase the new DualSense controller’s haptic feedback triggers nicely. Although it would have been nice to see a true sequel to PS4’s Spiderman, the Mile Morales game will surely offer a satisfying return to New York. Demon’s Souls is a remake of the PS3 classic and will sure to have some fresh challenges.

We learned that some of the early first-party titles will also be released for the PlayStation 4. Some of these games will come with a free upgrade to the PS5 version.

We also got some news about additional PlayStation 5 games with later launch dates. Much of the newly-annouced titles are the next games in established franchises. Final Fantasy XVI was announced as a PS5 console exclusive (though still to be available on PC). And we also got news of the next God of War game in development.

There’s a lot more great information and a good look at some upcoming games in Sony’s live-stream of the event. See below for the full showcase.

Conclusion

Sony’s PlayStation 5 appears to have a strong start but will need to keep up the momentum. Microsoft created a lot of buzz with the $299 XBOX Series S and now we know that the PlayStation 5 will be $100 more. On paper the PS5 will have advantages over the Series S but we will see how it will stack up to the more powerful Series X. With pricing confirmed, the PS5 is sure to compete with the Series X but we’ll have to see if it can sway gamers over from the Series S.

What matters most is that Sony immerses gamers with this generation. We will have to wait to see how the new DualSense controller and Sony’s touted 3D audio will add to the gaming experience. It’s nice to see that Sony is offering free upgrades from the PS4 to PS5 versions of games, but it would be nice if they tried to push third-parties to do the same. If Sony is able to build out a strong library of games as it has been doing for the PS4, then they are sure to hold there own in the next console generation.

With about two months until launch, the competition will be heating up between Sony and Microsoft. Keep on the lookout for more information about launch and upcoming titles as the new systems start building their library of games.
